It's been years since I shot nudes; at art-college in the early 1990s was probably the last time I did a lot of it.
I shot a few semi-nudes during the workshop I did lats year in Miyazaki and a few weeks ago did a shoot with Mini Miu, here in Tokyo.
Miu is a great lady. Japanese but has lived in the UK and now lives in Holland.
She's been around Tokyo for a month or two and I took the opportunity to catch up with her and shoot a little. We have an idea we're going to do in April when she's back this way again.. that'll be a location shoot.
So, in order to just get to know each other a little better and warm-up to the shoot we plan to do later, we spent a couple of hours recently indoors taking some shots.
Nude photos, for me, have to have a point: so much of the location-shot nude photos I see by Japanese photographers [Kishin is a good example] are just 'nude woman outdoors'.... that's it. Nudity in an interesting location can make a great photo. For me though a lot of that work just seems, well, nudity for the sake of it.
So I am working myself up to my point.... and I want the shots Miu and I do on location to have a point. To say something other than 'outdoors, interesting location, here's some tits'.
What's this shot about then? The last of the day's light was nice. Soft and diffuse. There was an interesting view from the window, with lots of textures. The shot on the left is a multiple-exposure, done in-camera.
The idea?: quite simply I just wanted the shots to feel like we are, in the left-hand shot, seeing a little glimpse inside the head of the lady we see looking, daydreaming, out of the window on the right.
Gear and processing?
Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 Ai
Lefthand shot is a multiple exposure: 2-shots with manual exposure blending.
Processing: both were shot in monochrome but with a series of quick steps in Photoshop I created a colour toning that for me reminded me of split-toning with Kodak's selenium toner liquid, which I used to use a lot back in the day.
