Giant mechanical spiders invade Yokohama, Japan

I was in Yokohama yesterday, shooting an assignment for Nippon News. Between April and September, Yokohama Harbour is celebrating its 150th Anniversary with a string of cool events. The huge mechanical spiders are made and operated by the French performance-art group, "La Machine". The processed throughout the streets of Yokohama over the course of the whole afternoon and evening. Great day. Challenging shoot - what with all the Police, security and other people shouting 'Da-me!" [get out the way/don't do that] all the time. Even press access didn't mean I could get right near the machines all the time as they are, obviously, quite lethal if you aren't paying attention to what is going on: lots of hydraulically-propelled heavy metal.

Still, a very cool sight. Full set of pics available at www.nipponnews.net where they can be licensed for use. Copyright on this image is jointly mine and theirs.
