In 1961, the peak of tram activity in Tokyo, there were over 40 working lines. Now there is just one, the Toden Arakawa Line. Largely replaced now by subway trains, the Arakawa line is now possibly under threat from the newly-opened Fukutoshin subway line, in the Ikebukuro area of Tokyo.
These trams are the subject of one of my upcoming features for the Nippon News agency.
