Leaf in the last rays of the sun: Shimbamba, Tokyo

Had a nice half an hour on Friday afternoon, chasing the last of the sun around the neighbourhood where my youngest son goes to nursery-school. There's a little shrine down by the Meguro River - Ebara Shrine - which I visit whenever I am in the area. It always has interesting light, especially at the end of the day when it rakes down the little path that runs parallel to the river. In the autumn the low sun backlights all the leaves which have fallen from the trees.

This leaf had fallen onto the semi-polished stone base of the statue of buddha that sits at the front of the shrine. Sat upright, perfectly reflected in the stone if one got one's eye at the right angle. I watched it for about five minutes until the sun dropped behind the elevated railway tracks that cross the river in the background.

This picture sort of gets about 30% of the way to doing the spectacle justice..... because it's hard to fully and faithfully capture the dynamic range of shooting right into the sun together with the shadowy texture of the leaf. But at least having got something of its beauty means I can share the moment with you folks. :-)
